The Social Media Marketing Blog: What's Greater Than Sex?

  • Ken Burbary · 1 year ago
The thing that resonates with me the most about those facts is the mobile usage. I find myself spending more time on the mobile web, text messaging and mobile IM than ever before. This trend will only continue as more consumers upgrade to smartphones, like Blackberry or iPhone, which open so many doors compared to traditional cell phones.

Convincing, helpful AND entertaining. These numbers are a dream come true and the photo is downright precious.

Thanks for distilling such great data into one brilliant post! I have a feeling I'm going to be referencing this one quite a bit.

Thought I've never done it, I'm pretty convinced that hitting a walk off home run to win a conference championship, world series, etc. is better than sex, but hey, that's just me.

And honestly, the only thing that surprises me is how many people "still don't get it," that dont' see this shift happening right in front of their eyes.

Wonderful post. The statistics are not that surprising, since I fit into the main categories (not the flabby traveling tree-hugger one). What it is surprising that the corporate marketing management community continues to question these numbers without the availability of traditional measurement tools such as are available for traditional mediums (radio, TV, etc.). Thanks again.
PS. I have those glasses too.

The statistics aren't surprising consider the small and skewed sample set. 500 young men. Although I am surprised 74% are conformists, I thought we'd have more young male rebels.

I think people see the shift and fear for their livelihood. There's over 40 years dedicated to building value around traditional media. People that know that world and know how to control it and make money at it. It's not as clear how to make a living with social media.

Those that are good at it collect on advertising, sell things, write books, speak or get hired by big corporations. The fast ticket to making money is still getting hired or sponsored by big corporations.

Hey - some great stats. Thanks!

I hardly watch TV anymore, thanks to the Internet. It's hard to rival Google videos or quick blog posts when it comes to gathering information. The one show I do try to catch is now available on the network website--so why bother tuning in when I can watch it at MY convenience?

These stats are great. ...no wonder there's so much sex on the web. ;)

Great stats that you can take home to the bank. The swing between traditional and new media marketing is even more prevalent with these numbers.

    hey scott,

thanks for posting this. i definitely think traditional marketers out there need to realize that online marketing is the way to go. nowadays with the decreasing attention span of people, it's just too easy for us to click the back button, shut off the t,v,, change channels, etc. marketers need to worry about targeted marketing, they need to market to the people who actually care.

*sigh* it feels good to a geek, it';s actually a cool thing now. remember when geeks were made fun of? those fools!

It's over two years now, but I wrote a riff on one of David Armano's posts, where I said "The Geeks shall inherit the earth!".

    It's still true today.

"Is there anything about the above statistics that surprises you?"

YES! They were actually interesting, even though I was initially disappointed that the whole post wasn't about.. well, sex.

And hundreds of teenage boys and married men just started following @marketingprofs on Twitter...

i've been lambasted on the internets
  • scottmonty · 1 year ago
That's a priceless look. I appreciate you making it available in the Creative Commons area on Flickr - it really added a fun component to these sobering statistics.

I always knew in some way that The Pollen would somehow become the face for internet porn.... and what a face it is.

Interesting, it seems that the adoption of these things is becoming part of our lives. In a sample of 10,000 adults aged 18-24 we found a) 39% had one or more profile, b) they averaged just over 2 profiles per person, and c) other standard demographics like income, marital status, presence of children didn't discriminate between those with profiles from those without. I think we're passed the tipping point.

I have 2 TV's and neither of them are even plugged in. Take away my internet and I have no clue what would happen but it would be scary.

"40% use the Internet for more than 22 hours a week"

    Only 22!?!? :D

What surprises me is how little attention is directed at identifying statistical differences and trends among generations. I'd find these numbers and stats even more informative were there an assessment of 16-26 year olds, and how that differs from 27-37 year olds, for example.

There's much to be gleaned in knowing generational theory. Much to be gleaned.

thanks for posting. glad i finally came across this. i thought the "36% say they can’t live without the Internet for socializing" stat is particularly interesting. "can't live without" is pretty bold statement. also, love the common craft collabo for sync by the way. so smart.
