The Social Media Marketing Blog: Opportunity Knocks

It's great to see you've settled into a wonderful new chapter in your career, Scott! I must admit that the opening you mentioned sounds quite delicious and I'm glad to see Ford building up their capabilities and talent pool in digital communications. Any chance one could maintain this position in say, a Louisville assembly plant? I'm guessing ooVoo chats wouldn't supplant the need to be in the midst of the bustling HQ. ;)

Good luck in your search - sounds like a great opportunity for someone!!

I'll be visiting the careers website shortly. This is one of those 'once in a purple moon' opportunities.

WOW, what an awesome opportunity! If I could have three wishes:

    1. have that job,
    2. do it at Ford with the awesome people you've talked about and,
    3. to get to do all of that from Texas.

    : )

First: Thanks for the heads up. If you don't mind, I have two questions:

    1) What's your background? I didn't see an About Me section, but you look very young to have so much experience under your belt.

    2) How in the world do you keep up with that list of "Where to find me online"? Seriously :) Because I'm thinking that there has to be some sort of automatic update setting that I'm missing.

    Best,

That's a good point, Mich. I do need to add an "About Me" page. My experience is pretty wide-ranging, despite my youthful appearance. I like to think it's because all of this social media keeps me out of the sun. ;-)

Many of the updates to those services are cross-posted; but others are just a one-off thing that I update less frequently (such as Library Thing, upcoming ,etc.). Each has its purpose, but together they help to define who I am and where I share information online.

The majority of my updates are done through Twitter, Facebook and my blog. Who has time for much more than that these days?

    What an incredible sounding job!

While I'm not that far from Detroit (Toronto), it might be a bit difficult convincing my (PR Pro) wife to pack up everything (2 kids included) and make the move. If you plan on allowing telecommuting - and why not in this day and age - I'd give this one some serious consideration!

To be clear, this is an job that must - MUST - be performed at our WHQ. You'll be interacting with so many other teams it'll make your head spin. And since it's a cross-functional approach, you'll need good interpersonal and persuasive skills that will help you get the job done.

I don't care how technologically advanced we are as a society or as an industry - that's something that HAS to occur in person.

Unlike the rest of the comments, I am willing to move to Detroit. Keep an eye out for my resume. Thanks for the opportunity.

    Hi Scott

Sounds like great things happening at Ford. I'm not interested in the job but if I were I'd have given up looking for it on your careers site. First step, find the job - what search category do I use?

I'm sure you'll be inundated so maybe won't see this as an issue. One day we will see a much better connection between applying for a job and social recruiting!! Maybe Ford will be the first to create a career site where people engage first before applying - that way you could sell Detroit in advance and increase the number of potential applicants.

    Have fun.

Good point, Peter. I thought I provided a direct link, but it looks like it didn't quite work that way. The job function is under Communications/Public Relations and is at the Manager/Supervisor level.

I'm actually working with HR on integrating social media into the hiring process and web site - the current one is very dated and is on our radar for a redesign.

Sounds like a great job and I am sure it can be done remotely. At my company at least 40% of us work from home offices - and even if we are in an office, it is often not in the same State as our manager. So, why not join the 20th century and use technology to support remote work. Then Ford can claim it is a "Green" company!

Let me know if you need collaboration support - or visit us here at: http://www.ibm.com/itsolutions/collaboration

Marjorie, thanks for your input, but I respectfully disagree. I had IBM as a client and I witnessed firsthand the frustrations that occurred. I'll tell you why I think it's important for this job.

    1. This is a new function within the company. It's not as if you come into the job and simply follow a pattern of activity and a predetermined process. We're paving the way for how to fundamentally change communications at Ford.

    2. In my experience, there is no substitute for a persuasive face-to-face presentation. If you're trying to build relationships, change minds, or even brainstorm, a personal presence is essential.

    3. This is a cross-functional job - this isn't just interacting with one department. There are dozens of meetings every week with teams from across the company, where our presence is needed (especially since they may not be aware of us) and where we can make a difference.

    4. It's SOCIAL media. It doesn't mean we do our jobs from computer terminals and phones. We need to be interacting with our colleagues.

P.S. There are other ways to claim to be a green company without telecommuting. If you took a look at all of the things we're doing related to sustainability, you might realize that Ford is a lot greener than people give us credit for. http://www.ford.com/innovation/environmentally-...

This sounds like an exciting opportunity and I have just submitted an application via the Ford Careers website. Thanks for mentioning the opening here on your blog.
